| Something
very cool happened in the late 80’s that would
forever change the face of Punjabi music. A few
guys got together in the UK and decided they were
going to take over every dance floor around the
world. It was a phenomenon that erupted on to the
scene with intense dhol beats and electric tumbi’s
that shook you to your core. Music would never be
the same after the likes of Alaap, Malkit, Dilshad,
Apna Sangeet, Premi, Heera and of course Johnny
Zee. I urge you to go back and dig up those cassettes
or hit your local disc dealer and bring back what
was once the most original and innovative time in
sound. Memory lane never sounded so sweet. See if
you can find these hot tracks from some of our favourite
artists from the 80’s and the 90’s. |

Bhamrah and Sardara Gill are the duo that lead
the band. Apna Sangeet [Our Music] You had to
be living under a rock in the 80’sand early
'90's if you don’t who these guys are. They
revolutionized Bhangra music with their innovative
style and ability to rock the dance floor. The
band released 12 albums in that time, but went
their separate ways in 1995 to pursue solo careers.

ALAAP |
|
|
| ALAAP |
 |
| The
original Granddaddies of Pop Bhangra, Alaap was
the first fresh sounding UK band on the scene.
Founded in 1977, they combined folk lyrics with
disco beats and rock melodies. We all remember
their refined solo ‘nach mundiya’
as the song that put the entire UK Bhangra scene
on the map. Alaap continued the UK bhangra progression
through compilations such as ‘cham cham
nachdi phiran’ with the legendary Asha Bhonsle.
Alaap inspired a whole generation of Brit artists
to pursue careers in this industry while proving
bhangra can thrive in the mainstream. |

|
| HEERA |
 |
| Heera
was at the forefront of the 80's bhangra scene,
performing at weddings and mixers. Heera quickly
established a solid following both in Britain
and around the world. Perhaps one of the best
albums ever released out of the UK was Heera:
Cool and Deadly. They have since gone their sperate
ways and attempted solo careers. However the magic
created by Heera still remains a credit to the
UK Bhangra scene. |

THE DECK is perhaps one of the most influential
albums of our generation. Hoon tha main nachna
was the track blaring in every walkman in Canada.
Johnny Zee, who we all know as TAZ from Stereo
Nation, is still cranking out killer tracks that
are turning young kids all over the world into
Bhangra fanatics. We had never heard anything
like this album before. Pop bhangra is where it
was at before the remix age took over. If you
find one album from the good old days, make sure
it’s this one. You rule Johnny Zee! |
